This trailer starts out with a voce over by will smith, the main character through this he states what is happening and it is accompanied with fast paced shots of both how the infection began and how it is being handled. here they have used a series of fast jump cuts which show how everything is happening extremely quickly and it shows clips of fences getting knocked over and a crowd of people running through the quarantine zone. this is used to create a panicked atmosphere in which the trailer speeds up. This shot also shows a background to the character as it shows that he has what appears to be a son and a wife. the mise en scene here shows that they are in a hurry, this is shown in the fact that he is carrying the young boy. this show that they are in a hurry as small children cannot run as fast as adults so to compensate he is carrying he young boy so they can move faster.
The next shot is of a human eye and previously of a needle withdrawing blood. this is also accompanied by the voice over we saw mutations. this as well as the human shows that these mutations are affecting the human race. this was a clever way of showing this as the person is lying down which shows that they are being operated or tested on as you are usually placed on a bed to be examined. the use of the eye, also shows that these mutations change
the appearance of the eye, this may indicate a difference between he infected and the immune. the fact that it appears that this person is having their eye held open by someone shows that they may be infected and are unconscious or dead and an autopsy is being carried out to find the cause.
this next close up shot shows the character in the future after the events that have occurred. this explains the voiceover as being a vlog of some kind in which he is explaining how it happened and what they did to stop it. it also shows that he is the only survivor as he is leaving behind a video of himself and from his facial expressions he looks tired showing that a lot of work has been placed upon him. the map in the background also shows that he has been marking the locations to things. these could be places he has explored or areas which are safe and those that are dangerous. this also indicates that he is searching for something as he is keeping a record of where he has been, this is so he does not waste time looking in the same place again.
This title screen is very hard hitting as it is implying that the world has ended and that the humans are no longer the rulers of this planet. it also follows on from the begining voice over as it shows that the mutations changed something in the humans or it wiped them all out. this also shows that he is the only survivor as he is still alive, indicating he i imune to the infection. it is also saida s a fact which brings the realty into the film as if there are no questions, it has happened and the effects are final.
this part follows on from a large explosion, this shot was in slow motion and the sound was muffled. this gives a sense of shellshock, which usually happens after you are close to a major explosion. the background of the shot is blurred out using pull focus, this indicates that you should be focusing on this character. this also suggests that whatever has just happened directly effects him. he is looking up in a confused and frightened manner. this showing that it was something close to him. The use of slow motion and muffled sound may also have suggested that what just happened involved someone close to him as when something bad happens to someone you love it takes a short period of adjustment and recognition of what just happened. as it something that you don't want to believe.
this shot shows a major bridge being destroyed by a helicopter that was in turbulence. this shot may show how connection is being lost to the outside world and the fact that the helicopter crashed due to turbulence at a low height shows that everything that would normally run smoothly is becoming extremely hard. this shot also carries on as the first shot after the next sequence of title screens. here the bridge is still destroyed and nothing has been done to repair it, showing that the human race has come to an end as something as big as this would normally be fixed very soon. also in the background you can see the other bridge which has been destroyed and in the previous shot it was still standing. this show shows how something must have happened to that bridge as well, or that it was purposely blown up so that no one can get off the island were the main character is located. this may show that the infection had become to strong and a lot of people were infected and this was an attempt to contain the island to stop them getting out and spreading the infection further.
this shot shows the ain character once again, this shot shows him looking off to the right indicating that he is focusing on something. this accompanied by the fact he is aiming a gun at it shows that it may be something that poses a threat to him and he has to defend himself. he also looks extremely tired showing that something may be keeping him awake or that he a lot of things to do. the sun glare had been used here to show either morning or sun set which may indicate that he has either only just woken up and come out searching or that he is tired from a long day. Either way it shows that he has to defend himself at all times of the day as he has brought a gun out just in case. it shows that something is a danger to him and he has to use deadly force to defend himself.
this next shot shows how the functions of everyday life has changed as he is walking in the middle of the street on what appears to have been a busy street shown by the number of cars. However these cars look old and unused which shows that whoevers car this was is either dead or has abandoned the car. the street is also starting to look old as there are weeds growing between the slabs which shows how they are no longer being cared for. This shot has been zoomed in from a previous shot which shows him walking along the street with a dog, this enforces the view of the dog a mans best friend, it also shows that he has protected this dog as in the beginning he is holding a German shepherd puppy and this is obviously that dog. a voice over saying its been 3 years shows that he cares for this dog a lot as he has not killed it or horrible to say eaten it as after this amount of time food may be hard to come across.
here a sort of swooping camera shot is used this is to show the scale of something as it tries to fit everything into the frame. it also shows the character playing golf on top of a SR71 blackbird a highly advanced aircraft. the fact that he is playing a game on it suggests that the military has fallen as this equipment would be used if it was still functional and he would definitely not be able to do what he is doing.
this next shot shows how his car is the only one on the road. this looks peculiar as it is a large road showing it is a heavily used road and the fact that he is the only one shows that something has happened to prevent people using it. the clip also shows that he has had to have travelled a great distance to get to somewhere, showing that he has explored the area that is close to him. this shows that it must have been a long time since the disaster because it would have taken a long time to search the
entire area.
This shot is of a window that has been broken into or out of. the fact that this shot is on the screen for a number of seconds shows that something important or dangerous is in there. and the darkness within the window shows that there is no electricity anymore lighting it up. the window also has a metal frame which shows that whatever broke it is very strong. here there is also a strnge noise which is not being made by a human, showing that whatever it is is not human and that he must treat it with extreme caution
this shot of the dog with its ears up and in a position were it is ready to run shows that it is bigger than the dog and is also a threat to the dog, indicating that the infection does not just effect humans, the dog also growls. a dog usually does this when it feels threatened, or it is warning someone. the fact that the dog is looking at something and can here something (ears up) shows that it is close and coming towards them.
this shot is showing the main character locking himself in a house blocking out all light getting in or out. this is showing that whatever it is that is the danger comes out at night and he has to prepare for it during sun set. This is followed by another 2 quick shots of him shutting the shutters. this is very quick which shows that he has to act quickly or he will be caught. this also shows his home as it is clean and has been looked after in comparison to the outside. this shows that he is still human as he still looks after himself and where he lives.
this next shot shows the main character lying in a bath tub. this shot comes straight after the clips of him closing the shutters. this shot has been used to show the characters emotions. for instance he is curled up in the foetal position, this is usually the position that someone sits in if they feel in danger or are feeling upset. He is also holding onto his dog while it sleeps, this may show how he wants to keep it close so that nothing happens to it, also reinforcing the fact that this dog means a lot to him. He is also holding an assault rifle which shows that even though he is in his own house he still does not feel safe. this shot is accompanied with the sounds of the creature in the background showing how during the night they are extremely active.
This shot then spirals around zooming into the character. this gives he sense that he is uncomfortable and on edge as the spiral effect makes it feel like his mind is wandering and he feels like he is going slightly insane with the sound of the monsters. This can be shown by the fact that he brings his hands over his ears to block out the noise, he does this with great force pressing down which shows that they are very load.
this next shot shows the dog cowering underneath a desk then will smith finds him and then Sam (the dog) cowers further back under the desk. this shows that it is scared and that whatever it is, is very close.
this is a shot of the infected monster, this is an extremely quick shot and is very hard to make out due to the only source of lighting originating from the torch on the end of the gun. this shot was done so that the audience see what the character would see with the room being in complete darkness. it also acts as a jump scare as it is very sudden and accompanied with a loud scream. this puts the audience on edge as they do not see much of the infected being.
The next big part of the trailer is when the voice over says that he has not yet been able to transfer over his immunity. This adding to the story that if there is a cure he is it. the mise en scene here shows a female infected tied down in a laboratory. This suggests that he is searching for the cure and has to capture these dangerous monsters to see if it works. It shows the contrast between the humans and the infected as the infected has lost all of her hair and is very skinny, this shows how they have potentially run out of food. This shot also shows his determination to find the truth as he speaks like he has done these tests before and they didn't work. this shows that he is still in search for the right cure.
As the trailer gets to the end the clips stat to get faster and faster, one of the small clips that I feel is important is the clip of an infected dog. This is because it shows how this infection no longer only occurs with humans it has no spread to other species. This shows one reason why he protects his dog so much, it also stresses his loneliness as he cannot let this dog die as it is the only company he has.
this shot is earlier on within the trailer however it shows how he cares for this dog a lot as he keeps himself a fit state and he keeps his dog healthy which shows he wants to give it the best opportunity to survive
In conclusion I believe that through voiceovers and shots used that this trailers aim was to get across the loneliness of this character and how he holds onto what is dear to him, in this case the dog. I would like to portray this loneliness within my trailer by showing what he has lost and how he wants to find it again.
